Cross The Streets - MACRO Museum of Contemporary Art Rome.

Cross The Streets
MACRO Museum of Contemporary Art Rome.
Curated by: Paulo Lucas von Vacano
Opening partySaturday May 6 at  20:30
Open to the public: May 7 – October 1 2017
MACRO – Museum of Contemporary Art . Via Nizza 138, Rome.

Cross the Streets is a multimedia exhibition that historicizes the street art phenomenon, the most globally influential art movement of the last 40 years. For the first time in Rome, a counterculture—by now part of the mainstream—enters a museum, the MACRO Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome. The exhibition will be on display from May 7th to October 1st 2017.
Promoted by the Rome Department for Cultural Growth– Capitoline Superintendency for Cultural Heritage, the exhibition is conceived and produced by Drago, together with nufactory (promoter and producer of the Outdoor festival), the ABC Project of Lazio and with the organizational support and Museum Services of the Zètema Culture Project.
The exhibition is endorsed by CONI.
The project was inspired by Paulo Lucas von Vacano’s research
on the Street counterculture and all of its derivatives.
As he explains in the exhibition catalogue, “the street watches [and] the street governs [...].
Choosing creativity instead of crime is a stance that encourages art, music and sports. The revolution occurs when the street enters the museum and the museum becomes the street.
Those who survive the streets, rule the world!"
Street art is a unique avant-garde that unifies youth, minorities, and the marginalized in an era of globalization. Cross the Streets at the MACRO will present a comprehensive introspection on street art through a kaleidoscope of urban art movements, including graffiti, stencil art, pop-surrealism, photography, and film. Street art in its various forms, from graffiti writing to mural painting, has a deep impact on the collective imagination. Originating as an underground movement of youthful protest, street art has positively invaded advertising, and the global fashion, film, and music industries. Cross the Streets aims to express the power of this complex and fascinating movement, highlighting its pioneers and its influence on daily life.
The show will also examine street art’s role in inspiring fashion trends and the history of Roman graffiti.
The exhibition is conceived by Paulo von Vacano and produced by Drago.

Wooster on Spring

Artists covered the interior walls with their latest, most ambitious efforts, transforming a casual auld-lang-syne get-together into a state-of-the-art statement that ranged from classic tagging to new adventures in papering, printing, varnishing, installation and, in one impressive instance, crayon. There were lines around the block.
-Roberta Smith, The New York Times

The line to see the show at 11 Spring st.
that is just how long it took to walk from the end of the line, to the door....

The three-day public viewing session was a landmark downtown event that drew crowds in the thousands, with people waiting up to five hours to get inside.
All the works that were created for the show were subsequently covered up or destroyed by renovation. The book ELEVEN SPRING: A CELEBRATION OF STREET ART allows these vibrant works to live again, ready for a new generation of admirers to enjoy and celebrate.

PRE-ORDER  your discounted copy HERE.
The book will ship from the beginning of November 2016.

ELEVEN SPRING BOOK IS AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER!

Wooster Editions is pleased to announce the November 2016 release of...
ELEVEN SPRING: A CELEBRATION OF STREET ART
If you've followed Wooster Collective over the years, you might remember a three-day event Marc and Sara curated in December of 2006 calledWooster on Spring. An unlikely group of nearly 100 street artists from all over the world came together to participate in an art show celebrating Eleven Spring Street, long a premiere destination on the international Street Art map. It featured artists including Shepard Fairey, Lady Pink, Swoon, D-Face, WK Interact and more (see a more complete list below).
The result was a potent mix of artists who brought the street inside by re-claiming the walls for themselves, and a tipping point for what has become an international art world phenomenon. The three-day public viewing session was a landmark downtown event that drew crowds in the thousands, with people waiting up to five hours to get inside.
All the works that were created for the show were subsequently covered up or destroyed by renovation. ELEVEN SPRING: A CELEBRATION OF STREET ART allows these vibrant works to live again, ready for a new generation of admirers to enjoy and celebrate.
It is hard to believe how many years have passed, but Marc and Sara are thrilled to share this new project to commemorate the 10-Year Anniversary of such an important moment in Street Art history and in their own lives.

With an Introduction by Shepard Fairey, an Afterword by JR, perspective from owner Caroline Cummings, and an essay from Randy Kennedy of The New York Times, the book will be released in two versions: a standard art book version; and five different Collector’s Editions signed by artists Shepard Fairey, JR, FAILE, and Swoon, and Wooster Collective.

S/visto
